Socialization Seminar
I liked a lot of the key ideas that were said in the socratic seminar, mostly because it changed my views of socialization. However my biggest take away from it was in the title itself and the quote that went along with it. I thought that it really related to what I interpreted it as was racism on how we kill songbirds (people) with our words and judgments. Going along with that is when we talked about that racism isn’t all rich white people versus the poor and black. In my eyes this really told me that there was a lot of grey area as well as the other forms of socialistic classifications.
Going into more detail of what I took away from the title and the context of the book was that we constantly hurt others. We do this because of socialistic classification, this comes in so many different forms that it is very hard to comprehend. But from what I have noticed it comes in the forms of looks, friends, religion, others words, and the subject's actions to certain situations. This is what inevitably tears the human race apart. An example of this is in “To Kill A Mockingbird” on page 25-26 the character Walter was heavily socialized by Scout when she stated that he drowned his dinner in syrup.
Listening was not the only thing that I was doing I was always trying to contribute to the conversation when I had something useful to add. I was really motivated to contribute a lot based on that we had to contribute a lot to get a good grade. However there were a few times that I tried to start a word when someone else started talking and naturally I gave them my attention. Overall I tried very hard to participate when I could talk as well as something useful to contribute.
I don’t think that this book necessary matter as much as some people because what I really learned a lot about was socialization. I say this because I think that it could be replaced by any other book that covers the same material. Because of that I really wouldn’t mind the difference, though this book is a classic it just is not the same. As well as all the metaphors that the book has can sometimes lead to some really good conversation. Because I in my opinion an exciting plot is very very important mostly because I learn slightly better that way. Also I didn’t like the plot as much so I had a little bit of a hard time focusing.
