Your Life on Earth: Philosophizing Purpose and Place in the #21C
Reflection:
I was really inspired by Aristotle’s idea of eudaimonia and in particular how it is achieved through his idea of the golden mean. Then I reflected back on that idea and how easy it is to slip on either side of it which made achieving eudaimonia almost impossible. I reflected on this idea in the visual piece of this project. Which leads me to the question of how many of us are really happy with our lives when we lack any balance at all?
I gained many insights from this project many of which will forever change me as a person and how I act around others. This leads me to understand that the relentless pursuit of something is irrational and can lead to future harm. But also to understand that if you hide from everything then you will find your life lacking in sustenance. This project allowed me to have a practical outlook on the world that does not lead to being overwhelmed. Because typically when people look at the word they try and make it black and white when really it should be relative and viewed through an understanding perspective. Using this will prevent irrationally hating a group of people because you can see them individually as well as understand their actions. I have tried to use this philosophy in my own life and I have determined that it does indeed make me happier. I believe that this stems from me viewing myself as more of a pleasant person and makes me more content with myself. I believe that this philosophy is a good window to lead to happiness which most of all is our goal in life.
I believe that this philosophy is heavily applicable and goes well in conjunction with many other philosophies as well. So I believe that the pursuit of balance is how you achieve happiness with a few other modifications. But this leaves me with a few questions such as, is it possible to live in a world of balance? If we did achieve world balance would this be a world we want to live in? If we didn’t have happiness would there be any point to our existence other than our primal urges? Is happiness the same as success and if so how do we know we are successful?
